Puffballs

Common puffball fungus, Lycoperdon perlatum, or Gem-studded puffball, with Beech trees behind, photographed near Banchory in Aberdeenshire in September.
These fungi are white in colour when young and turn brown once mature.
They are only edible when they are young. When they mature, a hole in the top opens to release spores, which are released when the body is compressed.

Location: Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
