Red Knot

Red Knot, Calidris canutus, feeding on the shoreline, still partly in summer breeding plumage. Photographed in September on the Moray Firth in the Scottish Highlands.
This shorebird is on passage to the south of England during its migration from Greenland.
An adult Knot can grow up to 26 centimetres in length with a 47-53 centimetre wingspan.
It feeds on spiders and arthropods during the summer but its diet changes in winter to hard-shelled prey including bivalves, gastropods and small crabs.

Location: Moray Firth, Scotland
